Solution to installation problem under WindowsXP when AUTOEXEC.NT file is missing.

Description UCINET Installation requires the system file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT which is not automatically in some WindowsXP installations. If you are experiencing the symptoms below, the solution should resolve your problem.
Platform: Windows XP
Error occurs: During installation
Error Message: Includes the text "The system is not suitable for MS-DOS and microsoft windows applications."
Diagnosis: System is missing the AUTOEXEC.NT file that should exist in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32 directory. You can check this by looking for the file using windows explorer.
Solution: If that file is missing, it can usually be recovered from the installation directory by the following steps.
(characters to type are in red.)
  1. Open a command prompt window
This can be done by choosing "Run..." from the start menu and entering cmd in the dialog box and pressing return.
  2. Type cd C:\WINDOWS\i386 and press return
  3. Type EXPAND AUTOEXEC.NT_ AUTOEXEC.NT and press return
    Note the space after NT_.
  4. Type COPY AUTOEXEC.NT ..\SYSTEM32 and press return
Note the space between NT and the two periods before the slash.

The system should respond with the message: 1 file(s) copied.

If you cannot find the folder C:\WINDOWS\i386 (or can't find the file AUTOEXEC.NT_ ), use the Windows SEARCH procedure to locate the AUTOEXEC.NT_ file. Then go to the folder that contains the file, and start at Step 3 above.

Comments: Before installing UCINET, you should always uninstall the old version.
