Cognitive Style Questionnaire

From Managing For the Future by Ancona, Kochan, Scully, Van Maanen, and Westney.

This is a set of questions designed to indicate your cognitive style. The answer you choose to any question is neither "right" nor "wrong". It simply indicates your personal style.

Below you will find a number of paired statements and words. Please give each one a score so that each pair adds up to 5. For example:

1. In describing my work, I would say it is:

a. Challenging and exciting
b. Routine and dull

__3__
+__2__
5

Clearly, work can sometimes be challenging and sometimes dull. In the above example I have indicated that mostly I find work to be challenging, weighted "challenging" a 3 and "routine" a 2. In your case, you might have assigned 4+1, or 0+5, or any other combination that adds to 5. (Don't use negative numbers!)

After you fill out the questionnaire, you need to score it. The instructions for scoring are given at the end. Thanks for participating!

How to Score the Questionnaire

1. Add up your responses to each question into 8 sums as follows:

Dimension Questions to add up: Total:
Extraversion 2b+5b+8a+15a+19a+21a+28b _________
Introversion 2a+5a+8b+15b+19b+21b+28a _________

Sensing 4b+9a+11a+12b+17b+25a+29a+30b _________
Intuitive 4a+9b+11b+12a+17a+25b+29b+30a _________

Thinking 1b+7b+13b+16a+22b+24a+26b+27b _________
Feeling 1a+7a+13a+16b+22a+24b+26a+27a _________

Judging 3a+6b+10a+14b+18a+20b+23a _________
Perceiving 3b+6a+10b+14a+18b+20a+23b _________

2. Compare scores for each pair of matched dimensions. If one is more than 4 points larger than the other, that is your type. For example, if you score 20 on Extraversion and 15 on Introversion, you are an "E". If the scores are less than 5 points apart, you are neither type: just somewhere in between. For example, you might find that you are a "IN?P", which is what I am. The question mark means that I am somewhere in between Thinking and Feeling.
