Internship Opportunity

 

Project Intern:

The New England Board of Higher Education (NEBHE) is seeking an intern for its Excellence Through Diversity (ETD) Program. The goals of this program are to recruit, retain, encourage and diversify student bodies, faculty and industry professionals in STEM disciplines.

 

The Intern's primary responsibilities

1.  coordinate activities related to the logistics of an annual Science Network meeting held each fall at MIT for students who are underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM)--particularly African-American, Hispanic American, native American and Southeast Asian students.  This includes, but is not limited to, managing databases, distribution of information about the meeting and interfacing with the vendors.

2.  engage in follow-up activities related to the Science Network including serving as a liaison to outside organizations who use the Science Network as a resource. This will include outreach to organizations that may offer internships, scholarships and other such opportunities for students.

3.  oversight for the Information Clearinghouse which contains a variety of STEM-related education and career resources. Tasks will include the maintenance and update of the links, facilitating a bulletin board and soliciting and posting internship and job listings to the site.

4.  assist with specific data collection tasks associated with a current research project on the Status of Underrepresented Groups in STEM in New England.

 

Qualifications:

The focus of the ETD program is on building the talent pipeline of underrepresented individuals into STEM education and careers and therefore, an interest in diversity issues, workforce development, an understanding of higher education is desired. Preferred candidate will possess strong communications, organizational, research, writing and computer skills. Knowledge of research methods through course work and/or conducting a research project. Word processing and database skills are required. Familiarity with a MAC environment is a plus. Candidate must comport his/herself in professional manner as interfacing with students, educators, counselors, administrators and industry professionals outside of the NEBHE organization is a significant component of this position.

 

Hours and Compensation:

This is a part-time position at a rate of $10-12 per hour based on experience. Work study arrangements can be made.

 

Availability:

Position is available January - December 2005.
