Does the modifier "qualitative" apply to "data" or "analysis"? It could be either, which is to say, both. There are qualitative data and quantitative data. There are qualitative analytical procedures, and quantitative analytical procedures.
Qualitative data include: text and videotaped behavior.
Quantitative data include: interval and ratio level measurements, such as IQ or temperature.
Somewhere in between qualitative and quantitative are the results of structured tasks like pilesorts, as well as categorical or nominal measurements.
Qualitative analytical methods include: text coding, intuition, graphical displays, grounded theory methods, deconstruction, Levi-straussian analysis, dream analysis
Quantitative data include: statistical techniques, multivariate methods.
Somewhere in between qualitative and quantitative are things like Ragin's boolean induction technique.
Given that the qualitative/quantitative distinction applies to both data and analysis, can't we use either kind of analysis on either kind of data? Yes
